The Minnesota Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation
The National Science Foundation’s Urban Massachusetts Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program (UMLSAMP) based at the University of Massachusetts Boston in collaboration with IBM's Research Division is piloting a summer research intern program in Yorktown Heights, New York. This internship program is specifically aimed at undergraduate minority students majoring in science and engineering disciplines. The objective of this program is twofold; primarily to introduce selected undergraduates to an exciting industrial research intern experience and secondly to encourage these interns to pursue graduate level degrees in science and engineering disciplines.
There will be five summer internship opportunities at IBM's TJ Watson Research Center - one position for each of the following research areas: Software, Systems, Math, Science & Technology, and Services Research. Students will be asked to apply to internship postings online once their applications and resumes have been reviewed by the UMLSAMP Program Director Marshall Milner. LSAMP undergraduates can not be in their senior year. Preferred junior applicants must show a history of interest in going on to graduate school after they receive their baccalaureate degrees. Participating institutions from within the LSAMP network of 500+ universities and colleges will be expected to provide a $4,000 stipend at the beginning of the summer to their student candidate if selected and that stipend will directly be applied towards the intern's housing and relocation expenses which will be the student’s responsibility. In addition, IBM’s Research Division will provide a summer salary for 8-10 weeks with compensation between $20.50/hr - $25.00/hr depending on the student’s level of education.
