LSAMP Activity

LSAMP activities at Macalester College align with Alliance efforts to support retention and engagement of underrepresented minorities in STEM disciplines by providing an opportunity for students to:

  • Participate in a tutoring and study skills program purposefully designed for these students
  • Attend national conferences in science
  • Introduce students to professional scientists in industry and academia
  • Attend career panels that include Macalester alums from underrepresented groups who work and/or study in STEM disciplines

Institutional Scope

  • Macalester is a highly selective private liberal arts college in St. Paul, MN committed to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism and service.
  • An 11:1 student/faculty ratio insures that Macalester’s 1,950 students receive intensive instruction both in and out of the classroom. U.S. students of color comprise 18% of the U.S. student body, more than twice the average enrollment of students of color at Minnesota colleges and universities.
  • Across its science disciplines, Macalester has undertaken initiatives to attract and retain underrepresented students to the STEM disciplines. One such effort is the Diversity in Science Collective (DISC), a year-round initiative supported through the Office of Research and Experiential Learning in the Science Division. The first year students within the Diversity in Science Collective meet weekly to learn more about STEM careers, the research programs of Macalester Science faculty and about professional associations and conferences. DISC also encourages entering students to draw upon the experience and insights of advanced students.
