The Minnesota Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation
I am a senior graduating with a double major in Chemistry
and Biochemistry from the Institute of Technology and the College of biological
Sciences. After job hunting for the past few months, I have decided to pursue a
Doctorate Degree in Analytical Science. I have been awarded a 2 year NIH Grant
to be a Post Baccalaureate in the Arriaga Research Group in the Chemistry
Department here at the University of Minnesota. I appreciate the STEM Alliance
award that has enabled me to work with Dr. Arriaga this summer where my
interest in Graduate school has been fostered.
My summer research experience with Dr. Arriaga has been to develop a method for detecting mitochondrial DNA mutations in aging tissues using Thermus Aquaticus MutS. The research has involved protein expression and purification, and Electrophoretic mobility shift assays with mutated DNA and the purified protein.
